managing-debtAvoiding credit altogether is difficult to do because it is integrated into modern consumer society. For example, it is virtually impossible for most to buy a late model automobile and pay totally in cash. It is even more far-fetched to try and purchase a new automobile with cash. People also need credit to buy a home and send their kids to college. By the same token, modern households also need to be managing debt properly so that it does not get out of hand and ruin their good credit. Therefore, managing debt requires smart decisions about the use of credit. Managing debt with regard to credit decisions is actually simple. Just heed to the following tips.

Managing debt is easier if you don’t get too many credit cards or other consumer loans. And, if you receive a credit card you did not apply for, close the account. The only exception to closing the account is if the unsolicited credit card has better terms. In this case you could do a balance transfer and then close the inferior account. Probably you will see much less of unsolicited credit card offers because of the credit crisis but this rule also stands for applying for too much credit. When you have too many open accounts, they are difficult to manage

Stay away from payday and other high-interest loans. If you really need money desperately, borrow it from anywhere except these usurious places. In fact, you are far better off using your checking account’s overdraft protection in an emergency. Also included in the group of payday loans are the car title loans. Their annual percentage rates typically exceed over 300%.

managing-debt1Do not borrow money by a credit card cash advance. This also includes credit card convenience checks. The fees are high plus the interest begins compounding from the day you borrow the money. Once this happens, managing debt is extremely difficult. Again, this type of credit also has a higher interest rate.

Always track your balances. It happens quite often where consumers are having challenges managing debt and do not know the balances of their outstanding loans. This works against using credit wisely because increases in balances (such as a creditor raising their interest rate) could go undetected.

managing-debt2Managing debt effectively means buying only what you can afford. Overwhelming debt would not be a problem for so many if this bit of advice was followed. If that house or car you are about to purchase is way out of your league, don’t buy it. If you have to buy a newer used car instead of a new one, you’ll be glad you did in the long run because you won’t be burdened by heavy car payments and high auto insurance premiums.

Avoid impulsivity. Those who typically buy what they cannot afford and have trouble managing debt are also impulsive. They do not think through their decision to buy something. You should definitely sleep for a night before making a decision on a major purchase. A good rule of thumb is to also consult with your spouse or significant other before making purchases that will impact more than just yourself.

managing-debt3Don’t convert unsecured debt into secured debt. Not being able to pay your debts is serious no matter what. However, secured debts are a little more serious in that you can lose something of value to you and be compensated for less than it is worth. In other words, you could take out a second mortgage on your house to pay off your credit cards but then when you cannot pay that loan, you lose your house. The worst that could have happened by not being able to pay your credit cards is that a creditor might try to sue you for money due in court but you more than likely would not lose your homestead.
