Stay Motivated
One of the hardest things people have with dieting is staying motivated. When you are motivated to do something – it is so much easier to do. But when you lose your motivation to lose weight, it is like climbing a mountain using just your fingernails. You make progress but very slowly and painfully. So keeping your motivation sky high at all times is critical to your success.
Stay connected to your personal reasons for wanting to lose weight. For some women, they may want to lose weight so they can keep up with their children better on the playground. Other women may want to lose weight so they have a better chance at fertility. Men may want to lose weight so they have the ability to be more active. There are as many reasons to lose weight as there are people in the world, all individual and specific. Get connected with your exact reasons for wanting to lose weight and you’ll be successful.
Do things that motivate you every day. It is easier to stay motivated when you do things to motivate yourself each day. Many dieters find the song “Proud” from the Biggest Loser very motivating to listen to. Or even visiting a weight loss website can motivate you. Or talking to a friend who is also dieting. Or reading your favorite inspirational quote. Each of these things can help motivate you to continue losing weight.
Keep the self-talk positive. Many of us talk to ourselves in a way we simply wouldn’t talk to anyone else. We use critical, unkind words to talk to ourselves. Make your self-talk positive and encouraging. Even if you make a mistake then you can learn from it. Any progress you make is still progress. Staying positive encourages you more than criticizing yourself.
Write in your journal daily. Research shows that when dieters keep a journal to express their feelings, they are more successful than other dieters. A journal gives you a place to express your feelings instead of eating about them. This is a safe place to unload. Write in your journal everyday and make this a healthy habit you can count on. Soon you’ll be seeing exactly why you’ve been eating and you can stop it before it happens.
Find exercise that you love – and stick with it. Dieters who exercise lose more and keep it off as opposed to those that do not exercise. Swimming, yoga, running or any other exercise is ideal – as long as you keep doing it at least five times a week. Regular exercise will also increase your endorphins making you feel good from a natural “high.” Exercise is very motivating as you see weight loss results quicker when you exercise and diet at the same time.
