What are the side effects of the acai berry?
The acai berry has many good health benefits but some people are wondering; “What are the side effects of the acai berry ?”. If you are one of those people who takes a long hard look at something before you allow it into your body, this is the article for you.
After all the “new fads” and “new diets” that seem to come out for the Western world, could the acai berry be just another one ? Acai berries can give you a boost in energy, as all food can, but are there basic negative side effects of eating this fruit ? Let’s take a look at the facts and see if any authoritative group has found anything that should concern you about eating this fruit from South America.
A negative side effect of the acai berry is one that will not make you sick. The berry itself is said to produce an after taste that is somewhat salty. Some people claim that the after taste is not salty but more like chocolate. This one side effect could be considered a negative side effect by those that are trying to get away from things that taste like chocolate in an effort to lose weight.
The acai berry contains linoleic acid. If taken in abundance, too much linoleic acid will cause a lowering of the HDL ( high density lipoprotein ) cholesterol. This type of cholesterol is good. The LDL cholesterol is the bad type that your doctor has warned you about. How many berries will have to be consumed for this to take effect ? No studies have been done on this, so there is as yet no answer for the dosage that creates a problem for HDL levels.
The acai berry also contains palmitic acid. It has been postulated that too much of this saturated fat will induce insulin resistance. Insulin resistance is a risk factor for diabetes. There have been no conclusive studies to prove this. The one study that is investigating this is unfinished. For now it is a hypothesis put forth by doctors who are at best speculating about the harmful side effects of too much saturated fat in the human diet. Palmitic acid is not water soluble. This fact allows it to build up in your body if taken in an overabundance. Again, how much is too much ? The answer to that is not yet known.
As you have seen, a good answer to the question; “What are the side effects of the acai berry ?” is simply one of moderation. To answer the question above, there are no basic side effects of eating acai berries. At the same time, most anything put into the body in too high a dose will produce negative side effects especially if that substance is not water soluble. Use discretion with your intake of the acai berry and you may never have a problem with any side effects.
