Using Feng Shui in Your Home
Feng Shui (pronounced fung shoe-way) is the ancient Chinese art and science of design and placement: of situating a house on a piece of land or designing the interior of the home (and work place) in such a way as to optimize the positive flow of energy, or “chi,” to bring about health, wealth and happiness. Thousands of years old, based on the principles of the ancient Chinese text I Ching, it developed over time through observation and experimentation. Feng Shui Masters learned through an apprenticeship under another Master. Originally practiced in secret, it was utilized by an emperor who wanted power to be centered at the palace, not available to the average person.
Feng Shui practitioners use the Ba-Gua (also written pa-kua), an eight-sided figure in which each side represents a different aspect of one’s life: career, knowledge, family, wealth, fame, marriage, children, and mentors or benefactors. The Ba-Gua is placed over the floor plan of the home to see where the rooms lie in relation to these aspects. The Ba-Gua is also laid over the plan of an individual room to determine the areas in the room governed by these aspects. The belief is that if the energy does not flow well, the result will be an imbalance in those aspects of our lives. A person consulting Feng Shui may choose not to purchase a particular house because of the negative energy pattern that would affect its inhabitants. While there are “cures” or solutions to existing problems, one might choose select a different home instead. If, as is probably the case for most of us, we have no plans to move and yet feel that our lives could stand some improvement, there are some ways to do this.
The layout of the inside of a room is based on the same principles as the orientation for a house on a plot of land. Think of standing in the middle of a square. To your back is the tortoise, symbol of stability and security (always protect your back from attack), in front of you is the phoenix, soaring and rising ahead with clear vision. To your right is the tiger, with strength that needs to be controlled, yet vigilant to defend against attack. On your left is the dragon, anchored to the ground for stability, spiritually rising towards the sky. How does this translate into the environment? The ideal home would be situated with a hill or trees to the back. A home on top of a hill would be unprotected from the wind. A home at the bottom of a valley is in danger of floods and receiving negative energy flowing down the hill. The ideal home would have an unobstructed view in front, perhaps of a clean, slowly flowing brook.
For the interior of the home or work, place your back to a wall (tortoise) when sitting at a desk so that you have a clear view (phoenix) of the room. This way your back has symbolic protection (to prevent being “stabbed in the back”
. If you are unsure of what is happening behind you, you are more likely to continually get up to see what is going on. This leads to a lack of focus and decreased productivity. Businesses are using Feng Shui to create a more productive environment. In another example, the sofa would be placed against the wall, with a low table to the right (tiger position) and a lamp taller than the sofa to the left (dragon position). Other factors would be taken into account, such as the position of windows and doors, as these affect energy flow. Shape is also important, as corners and angles send out symbolic harmful arrows, while gentle curves deflect harm.
As we learn more about the principles of Feng Shui, we can experiment with it in our own environment. Keep the changes that create a positive effect, continue to improve on those areas that seem weak. Feng Shui is an organic process; there is no one way to do things that is best for everyone. When these various factors are in harmony, the environment and its occupants come into balance and their lives are healthy, happy and prosperous.
