Food Considerations When Pregnant
Some foods should also be used in smaller amounts and far less frequently when you are pregnant. When you are pregnant, some things that are no problem for you can hurt your baby. Since problems for your unborn baby happen when it’s under construction, they can be serious and not repairable – even fatal.
After the first trimester, nuts that have no visible mold and taste fresh are O.K. in moderation. Peanut butter is probably best avoided due to possible mold in some of the source peanuts and the high salt content of many brands.
Beans may be O.K. after the first trimester if well cooked and eaten in small or moderate quantities. The milder the taste, the safer the bean or legume probably is for your baby. Lentils are probably better than kidney beans, for example.
Protein is very important during pregnancy, so if you are vegetarian, make heavy use of nonfat dairy products and heavier use of refined grains and cereals like oatmeal – and egg whites and whole eggs – if you eat eggs. You might also consider whey protein supplements or brewer’s yeast.
Since it’s particularly unsafe for pregnant women to get a high salt intake during pregnancy because it can induce dangerously high blood pressure levels. You should not use salt more than very lightly – when you use less garlic, onions, pepper, spices, and hot spices – and, if you use salt use it only after tasting the food you are eating. Temporarily eat blander foods or use some cooked onion – just use a quarter as much and leave it out entirely at least half the time. Be particularly careful to avoid spices during the first trimester.
We still recommend against fats of animal origin and transfats such as are found in margarine and processed foods like cookies and crackers. Light olive oil and canola oil when used in moderation still are much healthier for you and your heart. And, in avoiding oils of animal origin, you also avoid perhaps the most significant source of herbicides and pesticides in your diet! Although this isn’t widely known, this is far more important than eating organic produce. The animals store the chemicals bioconcentrated by their bodies in their fat.
And, eating foods high in pesticide and herbicide residue is guaranteed to be bad for your baby!
