Attractions in Canberra
Canberra is the capital of Australia. It is the largest inland city in Australia with the population of 334,000. The City is situated at the northern end of Australia. Canberra was selected as a capital of Australia in the year 1908. This city is completely planned and abnormal among the other Australian cities. Walter Griffin and Marion Mahony Griffin, architects from Chicago designed Canberra and started the construction in 1913. The city is seriously prejudiced by the gardens, and also named as “bush capital”. World Wars and the Great Depression hindered the growth and development of Canberra.
Most of the official departments and agencies are in Canberra such as, Parliament house and High Court building. Apart from government agencies there are lot of social and cultural institutions such as National Gallery of Australia and National Museum of Australia. Canberra is also a main tourist attraction place in Australia.
Parliament House
Parliament House is situated in the peak of Capital Hill. The interior decoration and artwork really symbolize the strength of democracy. Visitors can have a tour assisted by a guide and also watch the Australian political practice when parliament session is on. You can also have lunch on the porch.
National Gallery of Australia
The Gallery is situated in the south beach of the lake. You can find the finest modern art collections in this gallery. It has more than 70,000 fine works; the rangers are from European Old Masters to latest international blockbusters. The other major attraction in this gallery is a sculptor. You can find lots of exhilarating works by Australian sculptors. There you can find the marvelous “fog sculpture” which covers the garden and lily pond with slight white mist. You can see works include growl painting from Arnhem Land, pukumani burial poles of Tiwi people, and fabric paints from central Australia. There is lot of foreign works from all areas, and many international exhibitions are exhibited in Canberra. The artwork is not restricted to paintings. Prints, sculptures, photographs, drawings, ceramics, fashion, furniture, silver and textiles also found in the show.
National Portrait gallery
This is located in Old Parliament House. It was opened in 1944, you can find the themes exhibited here will change every four or five months with day-to-day happenings include artworks. There is lot of works rented from private and public lenders which are really new and never exhibited before.
National Museum of Australia
This museum resembles the culture and history of Australia. The building of this museum is intentionally constructed with mixture of architecture and landscape. You can find exhibition galleries, restaurants, resource center and theatres inside the museum. The stable exhibition deals with the themes of Nation, People and Land. Australian Gallery expresses the original tradition of country. There are some temporary and traveling exhibitions with lot of collections.
