Attractions in Kingston

kingstonKinston is the capital of Jamaica, located on the southeastern side of the country. Kingston is the largest city of Jamaica. It focuses a normal harbor which is protected by a long sand discharge that connects both Port Royal and the Norman Manley International Airport to the Island. The population of Kingston is 651,880 as per 2001 census. Kingston is the main English speaking city located in south of United States of America.

There is lot of tourist attractions in Kingston, such as Hellshire and Lime Cay beaches, the remains of Port Royal, National Gallery of Jamaica and Devon House. You can reach Kingston mainly by Norman Manley International Airport, and also by domestic Tinson Pen Aerodrome.

Port Royalport-royal
Port Royal was the heaven for pirates during 17th century. It was also known as “The wickedest city in Christendom”. The active city was totally destroyed by an earthquake in 1692. Still you can find some evidence of the lost city. You can still see the Silent cannons to watch the Fort Charles. Fort Charles is the only remaining fort among six forts which was constructed originally to protect the port.  Lots of the artifacts have been recovered from the city and kept in the Port Royal Archaeological and Historical Museum. It is one of the main attractions of Kingston, daily thousands of tourists gather to see the odds and ends of an era. You can buy several mementos and enjoy the food.

You can find many valuable art collection of Jamaica in this gallery. The main attraction of this gallery is wife of a former prime minister of Jamaica and the 19th century sculpture of Edna Manley. You can find the bronze statue of Christopher Gonzalez of reggae singer Bob Marley, and also the collections of Mallica Reynolds religious work.

Devon House is one of the several conserved historic buildings in Jamaica. This house was build by a rich Jamaican who becomes the first millionaire of Caribbean, George Stiebel in the year 1881. This house consists of craft shops, restaurants, bakery, and pastry shops. This place is famous for its mouth watering ice creams.

The area of this Botanical Garden is around 20 hectares, located in the middle of downtown Kingston and next to the campus of University of West Indies, having lovely paths and peaceful gardens. The main feature of this Garden is cactus garden, ornamental pond and forest garden. There is a small zoo inside the garden campus.

This is the main event contains talent quest, lectures and practices on Raggae Music and the Raggae Music legend Bob Marley. The day will be full of entertainments such as dancing, singing, music. Regularly this day was celebrated in Bob Marley Museum, and this celebration will be broadcasted in all Medias.

This is the main event for every reggae music fans in Jamaica. This celebration will be conducted on the reggae music legend Bob Marley’s birthday every year. He died in 1981 due to cancer. The celebration mainly focused on music, karaoke competitions, forums, concerts, fashion parade, movies, and displays will take place in every nook and corner of the town.

Devon House Pre-Christmas Craft Fairdevon-house-pre-christmas-craft-fair-kingston
The fair conducted yearly once in Devon House particularly before Christmas. The events include fashion show, live music, and Christmas tree lighting competition. There will be lot of stalls displaying variety of craft items. Visitors are also trained to make articles and pottery, hand made toys, furniture’s and baskets.
