voipVoiP is increasingly becoming an attractive option for people looking for a telephone system.  With the ability to offer a lot of free and cheap calls VoiP is quickly gaining ground on the traditional telephone companies.

However many people are still worried about VoiP, they see a new software system that may have bugs and compromised quality and reliability.  This is far from the case these days, with many VoiP companies winning awards for quality of service and reliability.

So if VoiP is a viable option what then do people considering the adoption of its technology have to look for when choosing a provider?

1.    Price

Make no bones about it, price is always an important factor.  But don’t be fobbed off with a couple of headline offers.  First work out how you will be using the phone system.  Will you be using it for international calls?  Or for calling mobiles?  Look at how often you will be using the system and what services you need, then look deeper into the tariffs.  It is important youy understand exactly what your usage will cost you, and not just what the headline offers promise in price reductions.

VoiP has improved dramatically in its quality, but there are always some companies that leave something to be desired when it comes to the quality of their service.  Make sure that you check out the quality of call before you sign up to anything, you want to ensure that your line is of the quality that you want and need.

3.    Reliability

Whilst new companies may well offer top prices or great quality, if they are ew there is always the danger they may not last.  Make sure that any company that you are considering is known for its reliability and that it has been around for awhile.  The longer it has been around the less likely it is to dissapear and the more likely it will have an established customer service policy.

Many VoiP companies need software installed, and some need specific hardware attached to your computer or internet connection.  Look at what is needed and ensure that any you are considering are compatible with the systems that you intend to be using the VoiP on.

5.    Telephone number

For anyone to contact your phone you will need a phone number.  Most VoiP providers include this as part of their package, but make sure that you look into whether they do or not – and how they assign it.  The VoiP number should be assigned to you for long enough to be worthwhile, with an option to extend the life of the number.  The last thing you want to do is be changing phone numbers every few months.

I have been using Vonage via the Pap2 device for the past 3 years for Unlimited US and Canada calling for around $30 per month (including taxes). No complaints, no issues, whatsoever.
